Judge: Goddard ,Michael The panning sounds like an S3M and gets annoying when wearing headphones. Using no instruments also make it sound like an S3M, IT features aren't used. Order 16-23 remind me of popey. An echo on that flute at a different pan position is one idea. Also just completely adjust the panning so I don't have to turn stereo off. Otherwise, there are some good points, the notes parts. The title does describe parts of the song well, and changing the focus of the music alot makes it seem longer, eternalish I guess. Pretty typical finish. In conclusion, this is something I'd expect from a MOD/S3M format a few years back. |
Judge: Lu ,Philip The song does not match it's title "the eternal battle". Instruments have no life. The bass drum sample sounds too cut-off, and the beat goes from hiccup to generic dance beat. Pizzacto strings and the flute give it a circus song feel. Needs more "evil" chords to match style, the song is mostly major. Again, the ending doesn't sound like the ending to a eternal battle. On the good side, the strings add a nice substance feel. Bass piano instrument is played pretty well, butt the repetive other ones drown it out. Not bad though, and have fun traking!. |
Judge: Tamburrino ,Bobby This song could have greatly been improved with the use of several tracking techniques: panning and note events. More so the panning than the note events. You may want to consider at least setting the default panning on each channel a little bit closer to the middle, still keeping it left-right but not ALL the way left-right. Also, don't have everything stay at the same volume throughout the piece - maybe set the intro a little bit softer and then when all of the percussion come in have the main instruments cresendo in to the big hit, instead of everything getting real soft for the violin pick notes. Lead in to the hit, don't fade away. Unfortunately, this song seems like it might have had some good ideas, but it just fails due to technicalities. |
Judge: Grandpre ,Dan Sorry to whoever wrote this, but this is utterly awful. Topping the list of things out of place are the crash cymbals.. The lines are very cliche and in the mix sound pretty awful as well.. the drums dont sound like they had much thought put into them, nor do any of the other parts. One of the many tunes this year that classifies more as a joke tune than anything else.. There's an attempt at riffs of some sort, and things of that nature but that's about it for the good points.. This reminds me of one of those old amiga soundtracker tunes like wizard2 or something.. if it were 1990 or 1991 now, maybe that would be cool. |
Judge: Wu ,Sherman Catchy tune for the flute flute. Well supported by the base. However, the general low quality of the sampled became very distracting. Good piano samples are hard to make, but would have been worth it for this song. Since many of the samples were played in staccato, it would be worth using better samples. Try using Impulse Tracker instruments to make notes overlap - otherwise it'll end up sounding VERY _ROOKIE_. However, there were also parts of triumph, such as the combination use of flute and bass. Unfortunately, your musical genius is shadowed by the unworthy quality of your samples and the lack of use of effects. |
Judge: Latva-Mantila ,Vesa My first and foremost complaint is about the lack of dynamics throughout this piece.. everything just seems to blare out at full volume, all the time. This type of tune would also benefit from some well placed tempo changes, used to build up tension and the like. The samples aren't bad as such, but old and worn - I believe the chord samples (why use sampled chords in the first place?) come from an early 90's Amiga pinball game. Extreme l/r panning and sample mode - hey, this is 1998 and Impulse Tracker. There are some ideas in there which could be worked on, but in this form, that's just what this song needs, work. |
