Judge: North ,DTravis Not on my judgeing list...but I can't resist an Old Skool 4 chan chip tunes. Samples are well chosen, but I question that drum click. Great intro/closing. Body is well done, ant technical aspects are nearly flawless. All this in a 4 chanel song...truly an art forgotten by many. |
Judge: Moyes ,Glen The use of only 4 channels is still impressive, but the same idea was repeating over and over again. The lead was too high, and with the high vibrato... it made the lead sound kind of... well, un-impressive. Some improvements that could be made to the song was first: mabey adding some panning positions, adding some more depth to it. Second: the lead didn't need such a high vibrato, and also try being a little more creative. Don't use the same idea over again. When you compose again, write you idea down, and play with it a little. Do different variations, so you song doesn't sound like it isn't going anywere. But best advice of all... LISTEN to other peoples music, get ideas from them, and learn as much as you can about music and music theory. Other than that, just practice. ...Oh yeah, the broken snare didn't really fit in to the song. |
Judge: Ladanyi ,Michael It ends/loops just when it's getting started and feels more like an intro than a song. A fine chiptune all the same. |
Judge: Stewart ,David I realise the point of a song like this is to get as much as possible out of as little space as possible but in the context of this competition I don't see the point. As far as writing a great song goes you defeat yourself by limiting the quality and variation of your samples so much. Melodic ideas are average but since the song is only a minute or so long you never really gave yourself a chance to develop any. Still. Sounds OK for four tracks. Perhaps there is a subcompetition going on within MC6 for "chip" songs? |
Judge: Hampton ,Chris I know you're probably going for that C64 SID sound, but first off I'd think I should inform you that SID's were only 3 channels. Odd placement of snares. You did a nice job using those chip samples to get that filtery sound, but the chord progression gets a bit old. Order 10 (HEX) is nice. The melody you have in the beginning is so-so, but this song is terribly short. Not much to scream about.. The song isn't long enough to really develop. No chorus, no ending, no major changes in the song. Samples are chip, so what can I say? I'm not sure if there ARE any "high quality" chip samples. :) But oh well, you'll have to do a bit more than this (even with a chipsong) to capture your listener. Just plain lengthen it. Throw in some more ideas and try to write decent transitions. Use some more instruments... You only have 1 snare, for instance! |
Judge: Hutchinson ,Will not too bad for 25k, but for a 1meg size limit competition the sample quality is abysmal. chippy feel doesn't cover up painful highs, scratchy mids, and poppy bass. further, there's a glaringly discordant moment, and to top it off, the song seems to repeat itself frequently, not really going anywhere. either that or subtle variations in melody are just concealed by the constant aweful sounding samples. |
Judge: Abshire ,Jeffrey Nice chiptune... It's a bit too short and not much actually happens in it, though. How long did it take you to write this thing? :) I can't say much about technical matters for a 4-channel chiptune, now, can I? But from what I see, you did a pretty good job. (Disclaimer: Emergency Vote!) |
Judge: Jonsson ,Agust A potentially pretty cool chip tune is ruined by 1) annoying drum samples which seems to kick in almost randomly 2) the drum sample which is too loud and ruins the mood in the track 3) the fact the song ends too soon. Shame :( |
