Judge: Rudge ,Bryan This piece would have done so much more if all the samples had been tuned correctly. For example, the 4th sample (guitar?) was ear-piercingly sharp and when it was used the way it was, it made the rest of the guitar samples that WERE in tune, sound just as bad. I definitely liked the progression(s) at the beginning and pretty much throughout but a few things kept the song at an 'average' level: 1) obviously, the intonation brought the tune down in score, check the guitars/bass/flute/piano samples. 2) the drums were a little messy as far as technique goes.. they certainly weren't careless, but pay more attention to volume levels and don't try to be complex.. the core of percussion is based on simplicity and meshing tracks together without overwhelming the listener with cymbals or tons of stuff all at once. 3) ending progression(s).. after the really nice transition at orders 23-24, things started to get incoherent. at 27-28, I was asking myself how these patterns fit in with the rest of the tune.. the constantly ascending proggy was a cool idea but not enough details were thrown in or tweaked to make the patterns fit smoothly together... Overall, some moments really gave the tune potential, but intonation problems and form fluidity sort of overshadowed the good points... |
Judge: Grandpre ,Dan This one starts pretty typically-- wind and plinky guitar. This one made no impression on me. I guess being indifferent is worse than having a negative opinion of something... The samples don't go well together, that's one big thing i noticed.. The piano that comes in awhile into it is a terrible sound... also the last part of the song where it's somewhat more busy and such- everything just sounds totally wrong. The orchestra hits coming out of nowhere didn't help either.. Personally I didn't like this even a little but it has some technical merit even so.. and that still counts for a lot in this competition. |
Judge: Wu ,Chang You had lots of spcae left. What a standard guitar song plus tempo change, hit, etc... |
Judge: Roth ,Nick This was a really well done guitar Track. the lead guitar part was phenomenal. The samples were tuned and The drums were well done |
Judge: Norilo ,Vesa Sample set is not too great but used well enough. The guitar is tracked better than some but the bends are a bit too slow in my opinion. Also a few channels too many were used for it. Drum samples are so plasticy they only harm the mood you are setting. In the intro the crossover panning of the guitar worked well enough but in the full mix it gets confusing. Also some crossfading with the string samples would have made the sound considerably smoother. Poor lead sample, if reasonable tracking. Lacks a memorable theme. Some nice tries at buildups, but they don't seem to lead anywhere. The fast part should be also heavier and bigger sounding to make the buildup convincing. Ends abruptly. Anyway, enjoyable tune. |
