Judge: Voois ,Vincent *File Specs* [Filename]m6i-fgq.xxx [Title]Forgotten Quest [Total playing time]05:07 *Musical Values* [Creativity]Effortable time has been put into this piece, as well as big details are watched after as well as the small details have not been forgotten [Story] The gives the listener an abstract sounding of clear and nature environmental visions [Structure]A slow start, as the song progresses, the song gets wider and deeper.[Harmony]The wider the song sounds the more harmony you can hear, the percussion is a bit too widely spread across the speakers.[Realness/Fantasy factors]The samples are a bit too pale in quality to keep the realness factor high, the Sfx are nice though there are not that many. *Technical Values* [Instruments]The instruments are choosen thoughtfully, they suit the song, they seemed to be not very much arranged.[Samples]Recognisable samples, not specific trademark ones but ripped have been used. No spicey arrangements here either [Arrangements]Instruments have been coloured with patterntricks, panning is used in a quite descent matter, emulation of instrument modes are fine and as well about the small details, they make this song a nice overall concept as these details serve for the finishing touch. [Use of...]Surround has been notified... on my soundcard it sounds nice, my surround equipment would turn it into a rather dull song. [Sample Quality]8-bit samples ranging from 8Khz to 59Khz, such a pity this 8-bit noise produces so much unpleasant factor for this nice song's sounding environment. *Sounding Techniques* [Depth]Surround surely takes care that there will be depth..there are more possibilities to archieve this you know? [Width]Yeps, the song also gets pretty wide in sounding, percussion lines are sometimes a bit too much on the foreground but the other instruments are supporting eachother more or less. [Headphones]It was a dear pleasure to hear this song on headphones without being annoyed of ultra-right or ultraleft arranged instruments.[Speakers]This song sounds also very nice on speakers as it does in another way on headphones, it will earn a "Doublejoy" award for it. |
Judge: Basic ,Predrag Very nice samples, great main melody. When the tune really got going in patterns 19-21 it was awsome, reminded me of the karate kid music :) My only qualms are that it took to long to get to the best bit of the song. It starts getting really good just on the 4 minute limit and if the judges chose to switch off at that point they would miss the best part. Nice panning as well. Perhaps the drum solo in the middle could have been made shorter or cut alltogether to shorten the track. Otherwise its great :) |
Judge: Kemp ,Brian You (the author) seem to have a good grasp of ambience and music theory. Nice use of Dorian mode. I didn't like how the samples were looped (at least some of them)--it wasn't too detectable however. I have a lowly P-100 with SB16...your overuse of NNA forced me to restart IT with a channel limit. That doesn't sit with me well--it makes me not concentrate on the song. The flute leads had style. The rhythm solo around pattern 13, however, seemed to be detrimental to the mood you were creating. You made up for it with the wind chimes-like sample. The choir is good, but don't put too much fadeout and drift / NNA on them. Humans can only sing one note at a time. Overall, I was impressed, but you should use NNA a bit less. Volume accenting your leads (accenting certain notes by making them a smidge louder than the rest) would have really helped this tune. |
Judge: Rudge ,Bryan This piece had some really nice aspects to it, and some small downfalls which need attention. Basically, everything from order 17/18/19-> kicks! It really is what the rest of the tune should have sounded like. For example, the progression at the end was really clean and well-mixed with leads/melodies flowing overtop quite nicely.. granted, there wasn't much to it as far as length or diversity, but it didnt' really need it. However, the opening progression was quite different: the background chords and such were not tweaked to sound as clean as the previously mentioned and the harmonies involved with the melody/lead didnt have nearly as much impact or flow quite as smoothly. Basically, the shape of the "melodies" in the earlier/middle parts of the song didnt fit too well with the progression. For example, the melody in order 21 used portamento (briefly) rather well, and unfortunately, that's the only place I could find/hear it. Instrumentation was great.. nice choice of samples. Minor things that I noted when focusing on percussion: dont go too haywire with retrig, sometimes that can ruin a nice simple track.. also, at order 19, everything else changes, "why didn't the drums"?.. some things to think about.. otherwise, a great 'ending', but everything prior to it needed a little help. |
Judge: Tumidajewicz ,Przemek Nice effect on the flute, but you could give is one more reflexion. The harp part is very good and so does the background guitar (you should have used it more often) and perc. There were too much of the percussion in some places (order 13), but still I liked it. A good and well technically done composition. I'm sure it makes it for the second round. |
Judge: Wu ,Chang Clean composition. Wonderfully atmospheric samples, but not outstanding. Got a little bit boring. Tracked with more skill than judges would expect form a intermediate. |
