Judge: Wu, Sherman The staccato notes in the beginning almost drove me crazy. It was annoying. But, as it developed into the song and mixed with the other stuff, it became compelling and enjoyable. I love your use of speciall effects. Be careful of using cut and paste for drums. Still, you have enough variations (and even drum development?! :) to make it all work. I like the freestyle sound to this track. But, the trumpets sounded a bit fake. Perhaps you should use use some effect values with them. Cutting them short was ok, but real trumpet players like to show off too. Give em a chance by adding effect values and lengthen some notes sometimes. Overall, I still like the song. It has a unique atmosphere. The song really gets to show the musician's tracking skill and musical talent. On the side: please reset tempo at the end (or start) so that us "normal" people can let the tracker play by itself without having to press PLAY again and again just to reset the tempo. |
Judge: Hegstad, Jorgen Catchy start.. too bad that it doesn't get stronger in its development. The drums are a bit weak (especially the bassdrum) and the "de la soul / radix" monotonous string should at least have been an octave higher and perhaps also doubled or echoed. You have good breaks and bridges, too bad they don't go anywhere. Your lead (the guitar) is uneven and hard to follow. The part you introduce at order 20 you could have done much more with.. For example an other (not so weird) bassline and perhaps an introduction of a new lead instrument that you could've taken with you back to the first part again (at pattern 00). Other than that I really have to say that you have found a very good groove with the bass (apart from the earlier mentioned ord.20). This tune needs a heavier rhythm section and better instruments - given that and some more innovation, it really could be something. (Look at m6v-jayw.xm and see how things can be done.) |
Judge: Korte, Jouni The very beginning of this song sounded really good, but after that the song drops to level 'nice but quite ordinary'. The song is well made, has variation and for example the sample quality is actually quite good, but for some reason I just didn't get too excited about it. But still, it's quite a nice tune. |
Judge: Carman, Richard tis cool. It has a nice beat, originality is pretty high. A bit too soft for my taste, but it's good overall. |
Judge: Nowik, George Everyone loves a good funk groove thang and I am no exception. I've always liked the feel of these kinds of songs and they get me in a real good mood. Nice and light and moving all the time. Great music to listen to. Some of the samples had a few issues (read below) but overall was very nice. If it weren't for the middle interlude of this song, I would have started to immediately lump this song in with a lot of the other songs of this kind over the last several years. However, this song took a nice little twist in the middle of it which caused me to raise an eyebrow. A very bold and brave thing to try to do in a tracker in this environment. Very well done. Nothing stood out as being particularly abrasive. The song flowed well together into each different part and kept the listener listening. Good use of the tracker is definitely a plus to have when trying to track a song of this particular style. Fades and such are a tool so necessary it hurts. Making some of the notes sound good when being played back can be difficulty at times. This was done well. The only grip I had about this song was some of the samples used. Some were played way out of their range of happy use. That's been the trend over the last several years, but that doesn't meant that it doesn't get on my nerves any less. Either more samples need to be made to allow for the range of notes used or less range used. |
Judge: Grillmaier, Sebastian Bad Samples. Noisy, bad loops. Originality: Your average "Supposed-to-be-funky" scene track, with a few twists. Leads sound like randomly entered. Few effects, good use of volumes. Needs more delay/reverb in the leads and better drum (these just do not kick). The flow of the song is disturbed by the cruel timpali/bass solo part which doesn't fit the rest of the song. Good chord sequence at the start, OK panning. Sorry for not going more in-depth. |
Judge: Lamy, William I've been affraid of your introduction a lot : "Another yet 4-chords song !" Fortunately, your good samples selection and your excellent arrangments save greatly the song. Even if the sound panel is not very original, demo-oriented, the result is convincing. Some fill-ins are awesome, breaking parts are welcome. Good work. |
Judge: Brown, Yannis This tune gave mixed feelings while listening to it. It seemed a jumble of ideas thrown together, but did have a recurring theme to it. It wasn't really what I would call funk tho, more General Midi Rock. The samples sounded very much like general midi sounds like one would find on say a Gravis Ultrasound Patch Set, mixed in with some outside samples, they didn't quite blend well enough. The brass sample was too staccato'd, and should have a bit of fade instead of a note cut effect. The samples were clean, and the song had structure, which was a little weak in places. Other than that, this was a reasonably well tracked and panned tune. |
