Judge: Rodriguez, Daniel This is the best intermediate entry I've reviewed so far. The beginning is nearly perfect, showing a great technique and samples. The rest is maybe not as good but it's not boring because of the absence of repetition. The problem is that there isn't any melody good enough to repeat it. The background shows the wisdom of this tracker. Great samples, buy maybe the piano one could have been even better. Maybe it's not too original, but it doesn't mind too much when you're hearing such a good song. |
Judge: Herranen, Vesa The beginning was nice - fast start for a good song. I liked the song. Good idea to combine piano with synthetic sound, altough, it's not very fresh idea. The drumbeat annyoed me a bit, I don't think it was the best choice for the song. Maybe something simpler would've been better. Samples were ok and well used, I liked especially the lead very much, and the way you used it was cool, but you should have used it more. The bass maybe could've been better... Overally a nice and good song, with a good idea, ok samples and a proper technique. |
Judge: Nowik, George Ahhh a very nice introduction. The only thing that takes away from the overall feel here is a few of the samples not fitting well and being out of tune. This song creates an interesting mood and is enjoyable to listen to, even with the rezzo. *grin* As much as I wish this were an original-sounding composition, I've heard at least one or two songs of this exact same style in every music contest since 2 and all over the place in the tracking scene. While it is pleasurable to listen to, it's not totally original. The song has elements to it, however, that raise it above its bretheren to give it a unique feel. It is tracked very well without any real noticible abrasiveness. The song goes through without any real massive, gut-wrenching changes that would cause one to dislike the song. The ending is done very well as far as the flow is concerned. Not a whole lot I can say about the technique that goes into this song. It seems somewhat lout and out there as far as some of the uses of the samples without much variety but it's tracked well despite that. The sample quality is when we start getting into some real strange issues. Samples being in tune is one of the major things that I listen for, as well as how they all manage to fit together. In the case of this particular song, some of the samples (particularly the piano) do not fit well together and a few of them are not in tune to each other. While a song can be very well tracked and a good idea, the samples can make or break it. That piano needs a definitely replacement or some effect on it to make it fit with the rest of the busy-ness of the song. |
Judge: Haskin, Ian - first pad that comes in sounds rough (8 bit and static) - samples lacked brightness and definition - sounded like old demo music to me with all the pitch-slides - well tracked piano - synth lead was a little too agressive - variation within the different beat patterns?? - nice intro, good ending - |
Judge: Hesse, Liam Some of the samples in this tune seem to be just too far off-key to bear. Only slightly, but enough to make this difficult to listen to. Shame, really, since the rest of the tune seems okay. Perhaps more variation in the chord line in some sections may have helped. |
Judge: Rice, Jeremy The opening was beauteous. :) Fantastic. Anywyay. I would have chosen a different sample for the synth-lead... Yours is a bit too sharp for such a soft, gentle song. Same for samples 11-15. Add some reverb to those to soften them a bit, and the form will be much improved. Panning is too wide on the piano, period. Record scratches are completely out of place--blah! The second appearance of the guitar-ish synth lead (starting in order 1E) doesn't cut it, either. The ending was also very strange. That bass was moving, like it was about to pick up a new section to the song, and not just die like that. ...And now for the scores. Originality was good. Why? Interesting sample set, cool style, nice mix of hards and softs, lights and darks, simplicity and complexity. For the same reasons, form was another high mark (higher, actually). Technique was not as strong, however, due mainly to the weak lead in 1E and the general simplicity of the tracking. Still above-average, though. The samples were good and bad, averaging out to somewhat above-average. Finally, your overall score was -well- above the 'average' of the other scores, since the whole piece just 'works' despite it's subtle flaws. Very enjoyable song. |
Judge: Youkhana, Kevin Not bad of a tune the samples were misused in some places but othere than that the song was good. |
Judge: Brown, Yannis Ok, this tune was not too bad. It's your typical newage style demo style. Quite remeniscent of some more well known artists from days of yonder whom shall remain anonymous. The main melody is average, and gets lost in the background later in the tune. You need to concentrate on strengthening the melody and keeping it in the foreground more. The chord progression gets a little tiring after a while, and seems to jump around without much direction. Some good effects in here, and some very nice tracking technique. Lose the piano sample though. It sounds slightly off (ie not in tune), and doesn't suit this piece with the blaring synths and ambient strings. The backing was a little too low for my taste and it got quite muddy often as low frequencies will tend to do this if not kept clear. The drum track got very stale very quickly and needed more definition (again too soft and muddy). Some samples sounded very familiar too.. This tune had a very promising beginning, but lost it's appeal around pattern 7. The ending was a bit sudden, and was leading into something else which never was resolved. Panning was quite good. Over all a pretty decent effort. |
Judge: Norilo, Vesa The mix appears to be too busy. The drumloop is too vague for this kind of tune, it would need more bite, kick and clarity. Nice and fresh chord progressions in the beginning, but the maing song is so generic I hardly believed my ears. This song would either need more content, or then the mood you are creating with the active background should be more defined with better loops and percussion, and especially bass too. |
